Labor Contracts, Equal Treatment and Wage-Unemployment Dynamics

چکیده

This paper analyses a model in which …rms cannot pay discriminate based on year of entry to a …rm, and develops an equilibrium model of wage dynamics and unemployment. The model is developed under the assumption of worker mobility, so that workers can costlessly quit jobs at any time. Firms on the other hand are committed to contracts. Thus the model is related to Beaudry and DiNardo (1991). We solve for the dynamics of wages and unemployment, and show that real wages do not necessarily clear the labor market. Using sectoral productivity data from the post-war US economy, we assess the ability of the model to match actual unemployment and wage series. We also show that equal treatment follows in our model from the assumption of at-will employment contracting.

Real and Nominal Wage Rigidity in a Model of Equal-Treatment Contracting

Real and Nominal Wage Rigidity in a Model of Equal-Treatment Contracting Following insights by Bewley (1999a), this paper analyses a model with downward rigidities in which firms cannot pay discriminate based on a year of entry to a firm, and develops an equilibrium model of wages and unemployment. We solve for the dynamics of wages and unemployment under conditions of downward wage rigidity, w...

Equal treatment, worker replacement and wage rigidity

We adapt the model of Menzio and Moen (2010) to consider a labour market with directed search in which firms can commit to wage contracts but cannot commit not to replace incumbent workers. Workers are risk averse, so that there exists an incentive for firms to smooth wages over time and in the face of shocks to labour productivity. To avoid worker replacement (which saves on the ex ante wage b...

Relational Contracts in Competitive Labor Markets∗

This paper characterizes the distribution of jobs in a relational contracting model where both employed and unemployed workers compete for jobs. In equilibrium, identical firms offer a continuous distribution of contracts, with some firms offering high-wage, high-productivity contracts and others offering low-wage, low-productivity contracts. An increase in on-the-job-search affects equilibrium...

Worker mobility in a search model with adverse selection

We analyze the effects of adverse selection on worker turnover and wage dynamics in a frictional labor market. We consider a model of on-the-job search where firms offer promotion wage contracts to workers of different abilities, which is unknown to firms at the hiring stage. With sufficiently strong information frictions, low-wage firms offer separating contracts and hire all types of workers ...
